"Ready To Die" baby grows up

One of hip hop's longest running mysteries may be solved - and it's a pretty B.I.G. deal.

A high school senior who grew up in the Bronx says he's that chubby-cheeked kid on the cover of "Ready to Die" - the acclaimed debut album by slain rapper, Notorious B.I.G.

"Every time people find out they ask me if I got a lot of money out of it," Keithroy Yearwood, 18, told the Daily News.

He didn't.

He made only $150 for the two-hour modeling agency shoot, where he was shot in diapers, sporting a neatly picked-out Afro.

Released in 1994 by Sean (Diddy) Combs' Bad Boy Records, "Ready to Die" sold 3.3 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

"I just want people to know that's me," Yearwood said. "The truth is finally coming out."

Fans, who observed the 14th anniversary of the rapper's death on March 9, have wanted to know the truth for years. Many speculated it was an early photo of B.I.G. (his real name was Christopher Wallace) or one of his kids. Others thought it might be one of Diddy's kids.

No one was sure - not even the graphic designer of the album, Cey Adams. "That ended up being one of the most-asked questions of all-time," said Adams, who thought the baby was the son of a hairstylist that worked at the record label.

Butch Belair, who took the famous photo, also thought the baby was related to someone close to the project. "It was a friend of someone's friends' kid who had this cool Afro," the photographer said. "The Afro was as big as he was."

When RapRadar.com, a popular hip hop website, asked Combs about it last year, he said, "That was a baby we just found ....We did a little casting for somebody that looked like Big."

Diddy's record company couldn't confirm that Yearwood is the cover star saying, "files from then would be hard to find." They did confirm the baby came from an agency.

Yearwood's mom Delcenia Burns, 43, took out stacks of baby pictures of her son at their Sussex County, N.J., home to show he's one and the same - and dug up papers from the child modeling agency Chicky's Kids to support her son's claim. The agency, now closed, sent her and her then-infant camera ham to the casting, she told The News.

Burns said it was tough to get her son gigs because of his full head of hair. Some potential jobs even wanted to pose him as a girl, his mom recalled.

This time, the Afro worked in his favor. "We got a call from the agency saying he got the job," Burns said. "We still didn't know how big this was going to be."

It was years before Yearwood was able to appreciate the sheer magnitude of his place in hip hop history. All his relatives had posters with the album cover on their walls but it wasn't until he was 8 that it all sunk in.

"When I first found out about it, it wasn't a big deal to me," said Yearwood, who hopes to be a basketball star and study sports management in college. "Now, of course, it's a big deal to me."

Yearwood, whose favorite B.I.G. songs are "Juicy" and "Big Poppa," insists he doesn't discuss the album much because most people don't believe him. But, he admits: "It's an honor to be on this album."

7. Fabolous (Feat. Nate Dogg) – “Can’t Deny It”
The inimitable vocalist from LBC scored big with this catchy tune and helped catapult Fabolous into the spotlight.

6. 2 Pac (Ft. Nate Dogg, Outlawz & Top Dogg) – “All About U”
While most of Nate’s memorable work is with Snoop Dogg, Warren G and Dr. Dre, he has some gems with ‘Pac as well, with “All About U” being the most G-Funkin’est. It’s almost as if Nate was thinking of a hook, and while looking outside of the tour bus, realized that he recognized that pair of long legs and low ambitions from the last city he stopped in. Back before the invention of your Internets, most stalking was done within walking distance, instead of via RSS feed, and if you lived such a superstar life, there were definitely run-ins with hoochies past conquered. The fact that over such a stanky flip of “Candy” that Nate could make such nonchalant points about debauchery is part of his excellence.

5. Mark Ronson Ft. Ghostface Killah, Trife Da God, Saigon & Nate Dogg – “Ooh Wee”
What do you do when you’ve got a nice disco sample looped up, an appropriate guest verse by Ghost, his Theodore Unit protege Trife and a then unknown and presumably record label appointed Saigon, all ready to turn the lead single to your debut album into a certified party starter but still lack a decent hook? You give Nate Dogg a call to turn “nana nana, oooooh wee” into something memorable and even make it sound G to boot. Newbie Saigon couldn’t believe his luck at the time: “I’m already on a song with Nate Dogg, that’s why you wanna hate, dog!”

4. Pharoahe Monch, Mos Def & Nate Dogg – “Oh No”
It was the height of the Rawkus era at the end of the 90s to early 00s when the backpack behemoth couldn’t seem to do any wrong. But they couldn’t grown anymore either. The backpack/conscious crowd had uniformly embraced the Rawkus aesthetic but there was still plenty ground to be won in the arena of rap sales. So when the follow-up to the iconic underground compilation Lyricist Lounge dropped they found the perfect way to crossover to a wider audience without getting labeled sellouts. Label top sellers Pharoahe Monch & Mos Def teamed up for the lead single that Nate Dogg added his signature funk to with another infectious hook. Look who crept in the back door and got Rawkus some MTV spin.

3. Nate Dogg – “One More Day”
Nate Dogg always turned in brilliant songs on soundtrack projects. The Above the Rim soundtrack in particular raised the standards, thanks to anthems like “Regulate.” The equally impressive Murder Was the Case gave us the buttery smooth “One More Day.”

2. Dr. Dre (Ft. Snoop Dogg & Nate Dogg) – “The Next Episode”
Even without Nate, this comeback to shit on all comebacks would’ve been a success. The trifecta of Dre on the beats, Hov on Dre’s rhymes and Snoop at his crispiest? It was a no-brainer – and given that Dre and Snoop were coming off not making music together for a bit, they needed a homerun. Nate Dogg steps up late in the track – it’s almost like bottom of the 9th, bases loaded, 2 outs and it doesn’t look pretty. “Hold up… waaaaaiiiiit!” was more than just a catchy phrase; it was a solidification that Dre was indeed back, Dre and Snoop were a unit, and the G-Funk they helped usher in and blow-up hadn’t died.

1. Warren G (Ft. Nate Dogg) – “Regulate”
If Nate hadn’t done anything else in Hip-Hop, his feature on “Regulate” helped many fall in love with his gangsta harmonies. Before Bone Thugs really took off, not too many cats were trying to sound like true Gs in a sangin’-ass way. The back and forth Warren and Nate had, with Nate essentially singing his raps, and the story they weaved in the first verse? It’s a thing of beauty, with an ill metaphor to boot. I’ve never been, but if nights in the LBC went down like this (shootouts, gambling, fornication, getting bent) on the reg, it was definitely the New Wild West.

Christopher George Latore Wallace (May 21, 1972 – March 9, 1997), popularly known as Biggie Smalls or simply Biggie (after a fictional gangster in the 1975 film Let's Do It Again), Frank White (based on a fictional drug baron from the 1990 film King of New York),[1] and by his primary stage name The Notorious B.I.G., was an American rapper.

On March 9, 1997, Wallace was killed by an unknown assailant in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles. His double-disc set Life After Death, released fifteen days later, hit #1 on the U.S. album charts and was certified Diamond in 2000.[3] Wallace was noted for his "loose, easy flow",[4] dark semi-autobiographical lyrics and storytelling abilities. Since his death, a further two albums have been released. MTV ranked him at #3 on their list of The Greatest MCs of All Time.

Definition: Freaknik was an annual spring break meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, primarily of students from historically black colleges and universities. Begun in 1982 as a small picnic near the Atlanta University Center, it was initially sponsored by the DC Metro Club[1] and was typically held during the third weekend in April to coincide with the schools of the Atlanta University Center's Reading Day. The event increased in size and popularity in the 1990s with dancing, drinking, parties, a basketball tournament, rap sessions, a film festival and a job fair.
Atlantans' reception of the festival was mixed. In its heyday, the fest attracted upwards of 250,000 revelers to the city. Many residents attended and enjoyed Freaknik, and others complained about traffic congestion, lewd public behavior, open urination, noise, and trash due to street parties. City leaders eventually took measures to curtail Freaknik's accessibility, and hence its popularity. As a result, Freaknik moved to Memorial Drive in Dekalb County then Daytona Beach, Florida.

HipHopDX reports that Gang Starr’s Guru is currently in a coma and Miss Info confirmed that he’s currently at a New York-area hospital and will undergo surgery tomorrow after having suffered cardiac arrest. DJ Premier was supposed to speak to DJ Eclipse on HipHopNation tonight but she said he’s decided to put that on hold.

Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family right now.

Little Brother...Say it ain't so!!!

I remember when I used to hang with Badgramma Artist, Dynas back in the day and he put me on to a group out of North Carolina called "Little Brother". Then I had the opprtunity to go to N.C & record with them soon after. That was an experience I would never forget. I got to know & meet the entire Justice League before they blew up: Khrisis, Sean Boog, Joe Scudda, Big Dho, Phonte, Rapper Big Pooh & 9th Wondra. We hung out, went up to Duke University Radio station where 9th played all the samples from The Listening. The next day,9th took us to his favorite eating spot (Which I'm still craving for 'til this day). Next, it was on to Missy Ann studios,a little ass apartment where they recorded everything. Looking back on it now, I really should have taken more pictures & brought a video recorder, because that time was priceless!

And now, he day I NEVER thought I would see coming...The Final Little Brother album... "Left Back".
